As autumn deepens and gardening slows, October is secretly one of the best months to get new plants into the ground. The soil is still warm enough for root growth, but cooler air reduces shock.

TIPS AND REMINDERS:
Always water new plants well during dry spells.
Use a layer of mulch to moderate soil temperature and retain moisture.
Avoid planting in waterlogged or frozen ground.
Use stakes or support for taller shrubs/trees.
If planting bare‑root stock, keep roots moist until planting.
